In carrying out the CNSC’s mandate, CNSC employees are guided in their actions and relationships by the values of:
Quality
We strive to do the right things right the first time. We feel accountable for the conduct and quality of our work and are committed to continual improvement.
Integrity
Our dealings are ethical, objective, and impartial. Our actions, decisions, and motives are transparent and can withstand public scrutiny. We act at all times in such a way as to uphold the public interest and promote trust.
Competence
We are professionals who value and strive for effective and efficient response to our regulatory responsibilities. Learning, innovation, and personal development are integral to our jobs.
Dedication
We are dedicated to fulfilling our Mandate, Mission, and Vision in accordance with our Values.
Respect for others
We demonstrate respect, fairness, and courtesy in dealing with colleagues, licensees, and the public. We listen to others and respect their points of view even when they differ from our own. We communicate openly, frequently, honestly, and objectively with the aim of finding solutions. We promote consultation, teamwork, and collaboration.
The CNSC also has a Values and Ethics Strategy and Implementation Plan to further provide employees with guidance and techniques for ensuring ethical decision-making and for building and maintaining ethical relationships in the workplace and with stakeholders.
The CNSC Conflict of Interest and Post-Employment Code
The CNSC Conflict of Interest and Post-Employment Code sets the rules that employees should follow in order to avoid any situation of real, potential or apparent conflict of interest. Clauses of particular interest relate to personal assets and liabilities, outside activities and pre-and post employment.
Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act
The Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act encourages employees in the public sector to come forward if they have reason to believe that serious wrongdoing has taken place in the workplace.
The Values and Ethics Code for the Public Service
CNSC employees must follow the Public Service Values and Ethics Code. This Code states how public servants shall be guided in their work and their professional conduct by a balanced framework of public service values: democratic, professional, ethical and people values.
CNSC staff carry out their duties in support of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and Regulations. They must comply as well with other government regulations and policies, such as the Access to Information Act, the Criminal Code, the Contracting Policy, and they must respect the codes of conduct of their professional associations.
