CNSC protects the environment
Protecting the environment is an important part of our work at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
In accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and its regulations, CNSC oversees Environmental Assessments (EAs) to make sure nuclear projects are safe for the environment.
EAs are used to predict the environmental effects of proposed initiatives before they are carried out. They provide opportunities for public participation in activities undertaken by potential licensees and/or CNSC, including Aboriginal consultations.
CNSC’s EA process is somewhat different from EA processes at other federal departments and agencies, because our Commission Tribunal is responsible for making most EA decisions.
CNSC works in concert with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, which provides support to applicants such as training and guidance and funding for public participation for some types of EAs during the EA process.
