Webinar Series: Review process for the CNL's Near Surface Disposal Facility and decommissioning projects
As part of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s (CNSC’s) ongoing commitment to openness and transparency, we will be hosting a series of webinars to provide the public and stakeholders with information related to various aspects of the regulatory review process.
These webinars are being driven by the CNSC’s assessment of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL’s) Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) project and its hearings, which are anticipated in 2022. However, these webinars are also applicable to other ongoing projects, including the proposed in situ decommissioning (ISD) projects: Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD) and Whiteshell Reactor-1 (WR-1). The webinar topics are based on feedback received from the public during the December 2020 NSDF/NPD webinar.
This is your opportunity to speak to us! CNSC experts leading the reviews of the NSDF, NPD and WR-1 projects will be in attendance to answer project-specific questions on the respective topics.
Discussion topics
We encourage you to attend one or all of these sessions, which will provide a detailed look at the following:
- our licensing and compliance process
- how our staff review proposals, particularly in the areas where the public is concerned, and how we can ensure confidence in the safety of a facility through a comprehensive review
- ensuring the public knows where to get answers about key topics and concerns about the project and staff’s technical assessments
- any developments or updates on the review process for the NSDF, NPD and WR-1 projects.

| NSDF/ISD Webinar Series 4: Overview of CNSC Environmental Assessment Reports and Licensing Commission Member Documents | June 17, 2021 English: 1 pm EDT | This webinar will provide a general overview of the proposed format and structure of CNSC staff’s environmental assessment reports and Commission member documents for the technical assessments being carried out on the Near Surface Disposal Facility and in situ decommissioning projects. These reports will include CNSC staff’s findings, conclusions and recommendations, and will be presented to the Commission for decision. The public, Indigenous Peoples and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to review these documents and express their comments on the project proposals through oral and/or written interventions at Commission hearings. | June 16, noon (EDT) |
